Privacy keeps choices in the hands of the person who lives the life. It is the right to keep personal information to yourself unless you choose to share it. That includes your name, address, age, school, and photos.

When you use an app, visit a website, or talk to an AI tool, you often share information. Sometimes you do this without noticing. The app might record what you search for. The website might store your location. The AI tool might keep a log of your questions.

Some of this sharing is necessary: a map app needs your location to give you directions. Some of it is not necessary. And some of it happens without you knowing. So the responsible question, every time, is this: what information am I sharing? Do I need to share it to get what I want?

CONCEPT

There are two kinds of information sharing to know. The first is when you choose to share: you type your name into a form, you upload a photo, you answer a question. This is deliberate sharing. The second happens in the background: the app records how long you spend on each page, the site notes which links you click. This is background sharing. Both kinds create a record. That record belongs to you — but it is often stored by someone else. Privacy is not about hiding. It is about knowing what you are sharing and choosing whether that sharing is worth it.

Password safety

CONCEPT

A strong password is the simplest lock. It stands between your personal information and someone who should not have it. A weak password is easy to guess. Examples are your name, your birthday, the word "password", or a short number like "1234". If someone guesses your password, they can get into your account. They can get everything stored inside it too.

A strong password has four features. You need all four together. Long means at least eight characters. Mixed means letters, numbers, and at least one symbol. Unique means different for each account you use. Private means not shared with anyone except a trusted adult.

AI tools can generate strong passwords for you. But others can also use AI tools to guess weak ones. The responsible choice is to use a strong password. Change it if you think someone else knows it. Password safety is troubleshooting before the problem happens. You do not wait for your account to be broken into. You make it harder to break into in the first place.

Mixed characters are only one of the four features a strong password needs. A password can be mixed and still weak overall — if it is short, if it is the same password reused on every account, or if you have shared it with someone. Long, mixed, unique, and private all have to hold together. Missing even one is the first thing to fix.

Digital footprints

CONCEPT

Every action you take online leaves a trace. Those traces add up. A digital footprint is the record of everything you do online. It includes sites you visit, messages you send, and photos you share.

There are two kinds. An active footprint is a trace you chose to leave. You posted a photo. You wrote a comment. You signed up for a service. A passive footprint is a trace that exists without you explicitly choosing it. A site records your visit. An app notes your location. A search engine logs your query.

Both kinds can be seen by others. Sometimes by people you did not expect. And a footprint is easier to prevent before it exists than to remove once it does — the pause before you post or sign up is worth more than any clean-up afterwards.

"That website didn't ask me to sign in or type my name, so it doesn't know anything about me."

A site can log your visit, note your location, or store your search — none of which needs a sign-in or a typed name. That is a passive footprint: a record made without you explicitly choosing to share anything. No sign-in box does not mean no record.

Responsible use means thinking about your footprint before you act, not after. Can you ever fully erase a digital footprint? The honest answer is: not easily. What you put online tends to stay there longer than you expect. That is why the pause before acting matters — it is easier to not leave a trace than to remove one later. And remember: a footprint is not automatically a bad thing. The real question, every time, is what kind of footprint you are building, and who might see it.
