JEE Main and Advanced

▲CONCEPT

JEE Main and Advanced sit behind one entry — you’re facing one climb in two stages, not two separate exams. Every question at both stages is answered on a screen, an option chosen or a number typed, never with a pen on paper. Two shapes carry the whole climb. The penalty decides what you attempt: read the current notice’s arithmetic before you leave anything blank, because it favours attempting further here than the usual case — on the typed-number questions too, a wider net than you’d expect, since typed answers usually escape a penalty elsewhere. The speed paper decides how you run it: pick before you answer, take the easy marks first. Only the first stage’s own top scorers sit the second.

Time follows marks per question here, not per subject — every question in both stages pays the same, so hold an equal budget per question and never let a slow one eat the next. The three subjects pay the same too, so let your own log of lost marks decide where your hours go, never how long either syllabus runs. Confirm the second stage’s pattern for your year: a different institute sets it each year, it has changed before, and the notice, never an older sibling’s exam, is your source. Seats across both stages rank nationwide, so your target is the top: the marks still missing are slips and the clock, not syllabus gaps, and that same log finds them. The exact figures are in the box below.

Open the current JEE Main bulletin and one past paper. Answer the four questions from them yourself: what form, what the marker pays for, what a miss costs, how many questions each minute buys. Write the four answers down. That page, not this one, is what your season runs against.

Two stages, both changing every year — I do not even know what I am walking into.

You are not guessing at it. The shape is what this page teaches — two tools on a screen, the penalty then the speed — and the numbers are what the box below holds. The pattern has moved before, which is why the notice is read fresh, not remembered. Learn the shape here; check the numbers before you plan your season.

JEE Main and Advanced: check the current notice

As read on 14 September 2026, in the National Testing Agency’s own Information Bulletin for JEE (Main) 2026 (jeemain.nta.nic.in) and IIT Roorkee’s JEE (Advanced) 2026 Information Brochure (jeeadv.ac.in). The bodies change these numbers; the shape does not. Confirm in the current notice: JEE Advanced’s exact marking scheme and total marks, deferred each year to exam-day instructions. Also confirm whether any paper carries a descriptive or hand-worked component, and the exact eligibility cut-off count for your year.
