GATE
GATE mixes several question formats under one clock, and which one you are answering decides how a wrong pick is treated. Get a single-choice question wrong and a slice of its own value is taken back, so guess there only once you can rule an option out.
Whatever the format, you are paid for a completed answer, never an explained one — there is no space to show a step, so practice that ends in a described method will not transfer here. Give more of your clock to the questions worth more marks: time should follow what a question is worth, not how it looks on the page. The closing marks usually decide the outcome, since the same ranked list settles both a postgraduate seat and a public-sector recruitment shortlist — and those last few marks usually go to a rushed numerical entry or a question left for want of time.
The multi-select and numerical-entry formats carry no penalty at all: get every part right for the mark, or get nothing, so a wrong or partial attempt there costs only the mark you did not earn. Switch off the single-choice caution once you move past it — carrying it into these formats is a common way to leave marks on the table.
A fixed opening block on reasoning, language and quantitative aptitude repeats across every subject paper, so it rewards drilling on its own. The institute organising GATE changes from cycle to cycle, so read this cycle’s own brochure before you sit, never a memory of last year’s. Numbers sit in the box below.
Open this cycle’s own GATE Information Brochure and one past paper for your subject. Answer the four questions from them: what form each question takes, what the marker pays for, what a wrong or partial attempt costs on each format, and how many minutes a question’s weight earns it. Write the four answers down before you plan a single day of practice.
Tracking which format a question is on wastes time I could spend answering it.
A check costs a second; a wrong guess on the wrong format costs a mark you had. Single-choice is the only format that gives marks back, so the caution has to know where it is. The opening block on reasoning and language repays the same drill in any subject — that time is marks earned free of the syllabus. A ranked list decides a seat or a shortlist on its closing marks, usually lost to a rushed entry, not a check.
GATE: check the current notice
As read on 14 September 2026 in the organising institute’s own GATE 2027 Information Brochure, revised version dated 10 September 2026 (IIT Madras). The board below carries the numbers; a new cycle’s brochure changes them, the shape does not. Confirm in the current notice: the exact cut-off/qualifying marks for the year, set after the exam, category-wise. Also confirm the approved two-paper combinations, which papers run in multiple sessions that cycle, and the exam-city and admit-card dates.
