Railways: the RRB exams

▲CONCEPT

Railway Recruitment Boards run their posts through one or two rounds of a computer-based screen, each one a large set of cheap, equally weighted, choice-among-options questions under a firm clock, with marks off for a wrong pick. Because the questions are many and roughly equal, you are sitting a speed paper, not a paper of a few weighty questions: automatic recall on the common topics beats depth on a rare one. A fast, accurate pass through what you already know at sight will beat a slow, careful pass that runs out of clock.

Where a second round exists, it shortlists from the first on a normalised score, so clear the first round with a comfortable margin rather than scraping past its cut-off — normalisation rewards the margin. A typing test, where required, sits at the very end, qualifying only, trained to automatic alongside the rounds, not after them. The physical or medical standard runs alongside, its own pass-fail bar, unrelated to your score. Round count, pace and every threshold are the notification’s to set.

Open the current notification for the post you are targeting. Time yourself on a set of questions from a past paper, at the pace the notice states. Note how many you answered at sight, without pausing to think. That count, not a guess, tells you whether your speed already matches the clock.

If I clear the cut-off in the first round, that should be enough to move forward.

Where a second round shortlists from the first, the score is normalised and a bare pass leaves little room ahead of the cut-off. Clearing the bar is not the same as clearing it with room to spare. Aim for a comfortable margin over the cut-off, not the cut-off itself.

RRB exams: check the current notice

As read on 14 September 2026 in the Railway Recruitment Boards’ own documents. Centralised Employment Notification No. 09/2025 for Group D and No. 07/2025 for NTPC, Under Graduate, both read via rrbajmer.gov.in. The box holds the numbers; the Boards change them, the shape does not. Confirm in the current notice: Group D’s own exam duration and question count, not itemised here. Also confirm the current cycle’s vacancy count, shift schedule and shortlisting ratios.
