Teaching: CTET and the state TETs

▲CONCEPT

CTET and the state teacher eligibility tests run the same single paper — choice-among-options, and unlike most penalised papers you will sit, no penalty at all for a wrong pick. Read it against MCQ with a penalty: this is the one place the exam carves out of that tool entirely. A blank scores exactly what a wrong guess scores, so there is nothing left to protect by leaving a question unanswered — attempt every one, ruled out or not. There is no written stage and no interview behind it. The paper itself is the whole exam, sat once for a standing certificate rather than a rank, so this is a just-pass campaign — passing cleanly is the whole target, not a score to maximise beyond it.

State tests are run in words, by each state’s own education department or board, and none of a state’s own facts carry over from CTET or from another state’s test — read your own state’s document directly, never a summary written for the central exam. The paper split by class taught, the language-and-pedagogy syllabus and how long your certificate stays valid are all yours to check there. Find the qualifying line, work out how far below it you sit today, and once your margin is comfortably safe, stop adding depth — no mark past that point buys you anything further.

Sit one full past paper from your target test, under the clock, and mark it with no penalty applied. Find the qualifying line for your category. Note how far above or below it you landed. That gap, not the raw score, tells you how much season is left to close.

It still feels wrong to guess on a question I know nothing about, even without a penalty.

With no penalty, a blank and a wrong guess score exactly the same, so a guess can only help, never hurt. That feeling comes from habits built on a different, penalised paper. Attempt every question here, ruled out or not — there is nothing left to protect by staying silent.

CTET: check the current notice

As read on 14 September 2026 in the Board’s own Information Bulletin, ‘CTET-September, 2026’, on ctet.nic.in. The box holds the numbers; the Board changes them, the shape does not. Confirm in the current notice: the exact question split by subject within each paper, and the qualifying cut-off by category, set fresh each cycle. Also confirm your own state’s teacher eligibility test, a separate exam run by a separate body — none of its facts are stated above.
