UPSC Civil Services Examination

▲CONCEPT

The Civil Services Examination runs three stages; only the last two decide your rank. The opening stage — a pair of choice-among-options papers under a strict clock, penalised for a wrong pick — exists purely to screen you, nothing it scores reaching the final order. A qualifying bar sits inside it, one you clear rather than chase for marks, so the guessing arithmetic matters only up to that bar. The next stage is a bank-and-clock skill across several connected-prose papers, marked point for point, essay included; the separate language papers are again a bar, not a score. Your rank is built from the remaining written papers plus the interview that follows.

The interview carries no bar of its own — whatever it scores adds straight to your rank, so you cannot write off a weak showing as unscored. It rewards live, followed-up reasoning over a rehearsed speech. The pace differs sharply by stage: a few minutes a question on the screen, minutes per mark on the written papers. The whole run spans most of a year across three stages, so treat it as a season — build your material bank early and keep a daily timed answer, not a sprint at the close. The exact weights and paper count are the Commission’s own notice, re-read fresh each year; the box below names what is still to confirm.

Open the Commission’s current notice for this cycle. Answer the four questions from it, stage by stage: what form, what the marker pays for, what a miss costs, the pace. Write down three separate answers, one per stage. That page, not this chapter, is what your season plans against.

The screen eliminates almost everyone, so surely it deserves most of my season’s time?

Once you can clear the screen’s bar comfortably, more screen practice adds nothing to your rank — nothing scored there carries forward. Move that spare time to the written bank and to rehearsed, followed-up interview practice instead. Those two stages are where the marks that decide your final order are actually made.

UPSC CSE: check the current notice

As read on 14 September 2026 in the Commission’s own Examination Notice No. 05/2026-CSE, dated 04.02.2026, on upsc.gov.in. The box holds the numbers; the Commission changes them, the shape does not. Confirm in the current notice: the vacancy count for the cycle, and the Preliminary’s own qualifying cut-off, set fresh each year. Also confirm the admission ratio to the Main Examination, and the date sheet and interview schedule.
